Mowing the lawn is one of those chores that can take a lot of time and effort, especially if you’re using a gas powered mower that is heavy and tricky to start. But over time, more and more convenient solutions have been born and the corded mower is one of them.

But if you’re thinking of switching to this type of tool, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. In this corded lawn mower guide, we will be giving you some top tips to make sure you always buy a reliable and easy to use product.

Things To Look For In A Corded Electric Mower

We know it can be tempting to hit ‘buy now’ on a plug in lawn mower that appears to have it all, but what a lot of first time buyers don’t realise is that not all electric motor mowers are designed equally. That isn’t to say that some are terrible, but more to do with what they are designed to do.

Which corded lawn mower you choose will depend on various factors such as the size of your yard, the density of the grass, and how you prefer to dispose of the clippings. Keeping all of these factors in mind, you should consider the following points when choosing the right mower for you.

Power Cord

Many people believe that the corded electric lawn mower has one major downfall; the cord. That might sound a little ridiculous since what else would you expect from a corded product? While there is the issue of being tethered to the power outlet, a corded model gives you the benefit of never running out of power.

That said, it is vital that you check the length of your power cord before committing to a purchase. Measuring the distance from the furthest corner of the yard to the nearest power socket will allow you to determine whether a cable will be long enough.

If your power cable is too short, you may need to invest in an extension lead. Conversely, power cables that are too long may get in the way and cause a safety hazard.

In addition to length, buyers should also be mindful of checking the quality of the power cord. When electricity is involved, there is simply no room for poorly made cables. Fortunately, most of the top lawn mower brands pride themselves on producing excellent quality electrical cables.

The motor is one of the most important parts of a corded lawn mower since it is what will power it. However, many people bypass looking at this without realising that the power of the motor can have an effect on the performance and cut quality.

If you have an already well-maintained lawn then you will find that something around 8 amps will be more than sufficient. In contrast, dense lawns that need a complete overhaul may require something with a little more get up and go.

It can also be useful to look at the rpm which refers to how many times the motor turns in one minute. Much like amps, the higher this number, the more powerful the motor will be.

Self Propelled Or Push?

In the world of mowers, it used to only be gas models that had the self-propelled drive. But now electric and cordless mowers benefit from this feature. Essentially, a self propelled mower is one that moves itself around, all you need to do is guide it; think of it like a car. Conversely, a push mower relies on the user to push it around the lawn which can be more physically exhausting, especially if you have strength of mobility issues.

With a self propelled model, you will notice that the weight is drastically increased, but since you aren’t having to do a significant amount of work, this isn’t typically an issue. That said, if you’re looking for a small electric lawn mower then you may be better looking for a push version.

If you do opt for self propelled, you should be aware that there are some self propelled electric lawn mowers that have variable speed. This allows you to adjust the speed to something that is comfortable for you. This is excellent for when you are moving the mower over uneven terrain or on sloped ground which could be a little more challenging with a push lawn mower.

Grass Clippings

One of the greatest things about modern mowers is how versatile they can be. Yes, there are small electric mowers that have a collection bag and nothing more. If you have a very small garden and want something that will be easy to pull in and out of the shed then looking for the lightest push mower with minimal features will help you to get the job done.

However, for those of you who want something that can change up the way you mow every time, there are corded electric lawn mowers with various cutting options. Primarily, all mowers come with a grass box and this is the most commonly used method. The clippings are sucked into the box which can then be removed and emptied at the end of the mow.

That said, it is worth looking for a mower with a grass collection box that is large enough for your yard otherwise you risk having to stop and empty at various points throughout the mow.

Mulching is another common option for the grass clippings. Instead of going into a collection box, the clippings are circulated around the deck allowing the blades to finely chop them up. They are then delivered back to the lawn to give a boost of essential nutrients like nitrogen. This allows your lawn to remain much healthier and greener.

Alternatively, you may find a lawn mower with a side or rear discharge, or both. In this situation, the clippings are dispensed out of a chute placed at either the back or side of the mower.

One of the most important yet underrated features of a corded mower is its wheels. It is important that you have large rear wheels for good stability. If your garden has a lot of sloped areas, you will find that this stability is essential. However, it is still important to have a good balance between the front and rear wheels to prevent the back part of the mower sinking down.

Blade And Cutting Width

Most lawn mower blades are made from steel. This is a robust and long-lasting metal that is very resistant to corrosion and weather damage. Moreover, this type of blade can be sharpened so even once it dulls, its life is far from over. While there are plastic blades out there which are less expensive, they won’t last as long.

The size of the blade is also a very important consideration. If you have a smaller garden, you won’t need anything significantly large. Around 12-14 inches will be more than enough. However, as gardens get bigger, so should the blade with some of the biggest mowers boasting more than 21 inches of robust spinning steel blade.

One of the major benefits of the corded lawn mower is that it is much more lightweight and compact than its gas cousins. But of course, some models will be easier to store than others.

A folding handle is a great way to space save and can half the size of a mower, allowing it to be placed in much smaller gaps in a shed or outbuilding. Moreover, there are even handles that fold twice to further reduce the size of the tool.

In some cases, the manufacturer will create a lawn mower that can be stored vertically. This is ideal if you have very limited storage space.

Generally, a corded lawn mower is much safer to operate than a gas mower but that doesn’t make them entirely safe. Any powered tool, especially one with a blade should be considered dangerous and looking for models that have safety features is a must.

One of the most common features of the corded mower in terms of safety is an operator handle bar. While the mower can be switched on using a button, the handle bar will have triggers that must be engaged in order for the motor to start up. Once the user lets go of the pull triggers, the motor will stop.

Lawn Size

If you are thinking about purchasing a new lawn mower, one of the first things you should think about is how much lawn it needs to cover. Generally, it is recommended that anything above 8000ft² should be maintained with a gas mower as the power cord simply wouldn’t be long enough, even if you used an extension cord. Not to mention the fact that if long extensions are used, this will affect the overall power of the machine.

We have already discussed the size of the power cord and this should be something you think about in terms of lawn size. Moreover, it is essential to choose a larger blade for larger lawns and a smaller one for smaller gardens. The size of the blade will determine how much grass is cut in one pass, if you try to use a 14 inch blade on a 7000ft² garden, it’s going to take a long time.

Run Time

With a plug in mower, the greatest advantage is that there is no limit on how long you can use the tool for. Even with very large gardens, you won’t need to worry about refuelling or swapping out batteries.

However, if you did decide to go down the cordless route, you should consider that most batteries will give up after anywhere between 20 and 90 minutes.

The beauty of the corded electric mower is that it doesn’t require very much maintenance at all. There are no batteries to charge, no spark plugs or oil to change and there is very little cleaning required aside from brushing any grass from the blades after each use.

The only thing that you need to do is to make sure that you correctly store your lawn mower to protect it from the elements. If it is left outside, heat, sunlight, rain and other factors will significantly reduce its lifespan.

Electric motor mowers are much cheaper than gas mowers and this is something that attracts a lot of people. However, there are serious differences between the price of a budget mower and a high-end model.

While you don’t want to purchase outside of your means, it is also important to look for something that is the very best within your budget.

Deck Size

The mower deck is the part of the machine in which the blade sits. For the most part, you’ll find that it is made from either plastic or steel. The latter is generally much more robust but it is also slightly heavier and more expensive. But if you are looking to invest in a machine that will serve you for many years, this isn’t a bad idea.

That said, many of the modern plastic mower decks are made from certain polymers that are incredibly durable and far better than the mowers that were available even as little as ten years ago.

Sometimes, gas mowers will have a handy wash port on the deck to allow for easier cleaning but this is not something that you will find on a corded model. If water were to get into the motor, it could cause irreversible damage. If you’re moving from gas to electric, this is a feature you will have to learn to live without.

Adjustable Cutting Height

Most lawn mowers come with the option to adjust the cutting height, but what you get can vary from tool to tool. Having the ability to adjust the cutting height is important for two reasons.

Primarily, you may simply prefer to have your lawn cut to a certain height for aesthetic reasons. There are those that prefer a longer, more natural look whereas other gardeners like something a little more manicured.

You will find that, in the main, corded mowers come with anywhere between three and seven cutting heights. Of course, the more you have, the more versatile the mower will be. But on top of this, it is essential to find a lawn mower whose cutting heights are easy to adjust.

In older lawn mowers, the cutting height would need to be adjusted from underneath the machine. Oftentimes, a tool would be needed to do this making it a very fiddly and time consuming job. However, most of the modern corded lawn mowers, and other types of power, feature a central cutting height adjustment lever. This can quickly and simply be moved from one position to the next in mere seconds.

You should also look at the minimum and maximum cutting heights which are typically given in millimetres or inches.

Are electric mowers quiet?

Since gas lawn mowers operate using a mechanical system, they naturally give off more noise. In comparison, the smooth electric motor of the corded mower is much quieter and this is one of the biggest draws of this type of machine.

Moreover, it’s worth keeping in mind that the electric mower puts out zero emissions. While gas mowers harness incredible power, the emissions they give off can be very damaging to the environment.

Is the electric model better or the gas version?

The type of mower that is considered to be ‘better’ has very little to do with what each mower is capable of and more to do with what your needs are

If you are looking for something powerful enough to plough through dense weeds and unruly grass then there is no denying that a gas model would be better. However, if you are looking for a lightweight and easy to use lawn mower that will just get things done, then an electric model will serve you well.

Choosing the right corded electric mower for your garden depends on a variety of factors. You must think about the size of your lawn, how you want to mow and what features the mower offers. Keep in mind that while electric mowers are much more convenient than gas, they do have slightly less power and this is something else that may affect your decision.
