While gas-powered weed eaters have significantly greater power, the electric weed wacker is superior when it comes to convenience. But much like any type of garden tool, it is important to make sure that the electric line trimmer you choose is suited to your needs.

In our buyer’s guide, we will be giving you a run down of everything you need to know to choose the best electric weed eater for your garden.

Types Of Electric Weed Eaters

Electric weed eaters are favoured among modern gardeners due to their eco-friendly operation. Unlike the gas powered weed wacker, the electric alternative gives off zero emissions making it much kinder to the environment. Moreover, these tools are typically much quieter and a lot easier to use thanks to a simple push button or trigger start.

That being said, the electric weed trimmer is less efficient in terms of power. While modern manufacturers are finding ways to deliver maximum power from these tools, they will never be as powerful as their gas counterparts. But that certainly doesn’t mean that they aren’t effective, in fact, some of the best electric weed eater tools offer an almost comparable performance

When we talk about the electric string trimmer, we are referring to one of two different types of equipment. The corded weed eater and the battery weed eater; let’s find out a little bit more about each one.

Corded Electric Weed Eaters

A corded weed eater, as you may have guessed by its name, is a tool that features a power cord which connects to the mains. One of the major benefits of this type of electric weed whip is that you never have to worry about the power running out.

Battery Powered Weed Eaters

On the other hand, a battery powered weed eater runs off rechargeable batteries. These can normally be removed and charged separately so that you can purchase more than one. Should the power drain on the first battery, you’ll have a second to hand.

Furthermore, battery weed wackers are incredibly lightweight and for this reason, are skyrocketing in popularity.

Things To Look For In An Electric Weed Eater

When it comes to purchasing a weed eater, one of the first things you will notice is just how many products are on the market. This can often leave buyers feeling confused over which tool is best. In truth, the tool that would suit me may not be as useful to you; it all depends on your garden, your abilities and what you are looking to achieve. With that in mind, it is important to consider each of the following points before making a final decision.

Corded vs Battery

One of the biggest debates around most types of tool these days is where corded or battery powered is the best option. There is no right or wrong and each person will prefer something different. However, it is worth thinking about what you need since making the wrong choice could make tending to your garden a lot more difficult than you would have liked.

For small or medium sized gardens, the corded trimmer might be a good option. The cord will tether you to the power socket so you will be limited on where you will be able to reach. Of course, there is the option to use an extension lead but this does pose something of a safety risk in that the cable may cause a tripping hazard.

On the plus side, a corded weed wacker will not wane on power so you won’t have the worry of the tool cutting out halfway through the job.

Conversely, the rechargeable string trimmer is great for larger gardens as you do not have to worry about not being able to reach the far corners of the yard. That being said, you must consider that the battery will only last for a certain period of time. Unless you are willing to purchase additional batteries, you will need to make sure that you remember to charge it after each use.

Battery Power

Using a battery or corded weed wacker means that the motor will be powered by electricity and this is typically measured in volts. Where the battery weed trimmer is concerned, you will find that, almost always, the voltage sits at 120. Of course, there are those that feature varying current levels but you should keep in mind that the battery powered weed wacker will always be less powerful than its corded cousin.

For this reason, a battery weed trimmer should be used for lighter yard duties. If you have very dense grass and weeds then a corded model will be better. The point of the battery models is for ease of movement and more convenience.

You should also think about the battery running time. You will generally find that the rechargeable string trimmers run for anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes on a single charge. Although this will vary depending on the brand and type of battery used. In the main, lithium ion batteries are used to power electric garden tools like this and these tend to have a much longer run time and overall life span.

Battery Charge Time

As well as considering the battery’s running time, it is also important to think about how long the battery will take to charge. In the event that you find yourself out of juice halfway through a job, the last thing you want is to be waiting around for hours to get going again.

There are many garden tools, string trimmers included, that come with rapid chargers. Even some of the most powerful cordless mowers can be charged in just over an hour with these fast chargers so it is worth looking for a weed eater that has a similar feature.

That being said, in most cases, the string trimmer will come with a standard charger that will take around three hours, on average, to reach 100%. In this case, there will be a lot of waiting around so it may pay to purchase additional batteries if you can. Moreover, ensuring that the battery is put on charge after each use will be advantageous.

Curved vs Straight Shaft

String trimmers are surprisingly diverse pieces of equipment and as such, come in a variety of designs. The great news is that both of these designs offer convenience in their own way but, much like the battery vs corded debate, you will need to consider your own needs before choosing.

Straight shaft weed whippers are ideal for people who are a little taller as they allow a little more space between the handle and the ground. This makes holding the tool much more comfortable for the user. However, they can be a little more tricky to use since their rigid design means that they struggle to cut around obstacles and underneath things like garden furniture.

Conversely, the curved shaft string trimmer makes cutting underneath and around obstacles much more simple. If you have a complicated cutting path then this is usually the type you would select. Moreover, the curved shaft trimmer tends to be a little more lightweight and this can add to the overall user experience.

Weight

You want to be able to use your new weed eater comfortably and the string trimmer weight is an important consideration.

One of the greatest advantages of the electric string trimmer is that it is typically much lighter than a gas-powered model. That being said, some brands are heavier than others so before you commit to any particular trimmer, be sure to check the weight.

If you have strength or mobility issues, this is an even more important factor since a lightweight grass trimmer will be much easier to manage.

Height

In much the same way as the string trimmer weight can make the user experience more comfortable, the height of the tool will also play a part in this. Some weed wackers will have an adjustable handle which is ideal for adapting the tool to a position that is comfortable to you. Otherwise, you will need to check its length.

If you use a string trimmer that is too short for you, you will find that you are constantly bending over and this can put a strain on your back. In contrast, using a string trimmer that is too tall for you will mean that you have to over reach and this can be uncomfortable.

Ease Of Use

Nobody wants a garden tool that is difficult to use and one of the best things about the electric lawn trimmer is that it is far less complicated to use than its petrol alternative. However, it is still important to look at things like where the controls are placed; are they easily accessible or will you have to overreach to operate the device?

Starting an electric string trimmer is always much simpler than a gas model since they feature a one touch control rather than an engine that needs to be primed and can be temperamental when starting.

Cutting Diameter

The cutting diameter refers to how much ground the weed wacker will cover in one pass. Typically anything between 12 and 15 inches is suitable for the average sized garden. If you are working on a much larger area, you may need something up to 18 inches.

You should also keep in mind that an electric seek eater will normally have a smaller cutting diameter than a gas-powered tool.

Safety Guard

When you are cutting weeds and the edges of your lawn, there is always a risk of kickback where debris may fly back and hit you. Of course, wearing safety gear while operating powered machinery like this is a must but tools that have safety features in places are generally the better option in terms of protecting yourself against injury.

A safety guard is a simple addition to the tool that covers part of the cutting head, stopping any debris from flying back towards you. However, with this, your visibility of what you are cutting will be reduced so a clear safety guard might be a good option.

Noise Level

The beauty of the electric weed eater is that it is generally much quieter than a petrol powered tool. That said, there are some that can make quite a racket and this can be frustrating for your neighbours, especially if it is a longer job, as well as ruining the peace in your own garden.

There’s no getting away from the fact that the motor will give off some noise and while choosing the quietest model you can find will help, we would always suggest wearing appropriate safety gear such as ear defenders when using the tool.

How To Maintain An Electric Weed Eater

The reason that so many people opt to use an electric weed eater is that these tools require far less maintenance. However, you should make sure to protect the motor by not using power outlets that are too strong for the tool. This will help to ensure that your string trimmer gives you many years of power.

The same can be said for a battery powered tool. Always make sure to use the correct charger so that you do not cause damage to the battery.

It is also important to regularly inspect the appliance to make sure that there is no visible damage to the wiring, plug or any part of the body. If you find any damage, this will need to be addressed before continuing use of the tool.

Additionally, keeping the weed whip clean is important. If you wash it down after each use, this will be much easier to maintain and when you’re done, pop it in the shed to keep it protected from the elements.

Summary

An electric weed eater is a convenient tool for any gardener but choosing the right one for your needs does require a little bit of thought. By considering the type of electric power you would like, this gives you a good basis to start looking at other features such as weight, height and cutting diameter.
