What is a Lawn Sweeper Used For?
Keeping your lawn looking healthy and green requires so much more than just regular mowing and throwing some fertilizer on every now and again. You also need to offer protection to your grass when debris falls onto it. When the grass is covered by leaves, this prevents sunlight from getting to it and since grass needs sun to thrive, you’ll end up with patches of lawn that begin to die away.
But getting rid of fallen leaves and other types of debris can be a time consuming and often back breaking challenge. What’s more, you need to do it over and over again if you want to stay on top of it. But that’s where your lawn sweeper comes into play. These tools are designed to make raking leaves, grass clippings, pine cones, and anything else that falls onto your lawn quick and simple.
You may have seen people using a garden vacuum or a leaf blower; we’ve even talked about them ourselves. But if you aren’t taken by that type of equipment then a leaf sweeper is a viable alternative. These pieces of equipment can also replace the bagger on your lawn mower which could usually collect clippings, so if you use a side or rear discharge chute, your lawn sweeper will finish the job. Moreover, these tools have a much larger capacity and can typically hold twice as much as the grass catcher on your lawn mower so are much more practical and efficient; you won’t have to stop to empty as often.
The lawn sweeper features brushes that gently rotate so you won’t need to worry about harming your grass as your work. Especially if you’ve spent a long time trying to get it to its best!
There are many benefits to using a lawn sweeper, most obviously, you will save a lot of time and you won’t be exhausted when you’re done.
What Are The Different Types Of Lawn Sweepers?
When it comes to buying any type of gardening equipment, you will have noticed that there are a lot of choices and that is no different when it comes to lawn sweepers. It’s important to understand the difference between the types as this will help you make a more informed decision. In the main, there are two different types, each suited to its own application.
Tow Behind Lawn Sweeper
If you are looking for convenience then you might be wise to choose a tow behind lawn sweeper. These are larger and can be connected to your riding mower or other vehicle allowing you to more easily maneuver them around your property.
The main point of the tow behind lawn sweeper is that it can hold a much greater capacity so that the user doesn’t need to keep stopping to empty the hopper. This makes them ideal for working on larger areas but we should point out that you must think carefully if there is water on your property. This is because it is not uncommon for vehicles to get stuck and this means that your lawn sweeper ends up being clogged by mud.
However, since they are much larger, you should also keep in mind that emptying needs to be just as convenient. But don’t worry, you won’t need to lift a finger since the hopper usually has a handy dump feature that is operated by a handle; you don’t even have to get off the tractor to empty! As soon as you release the handle, the lawn sweeper is ready to continue working.
Push Forward Lawn Sweeper
If you have a smaller yard and don’t need something quite as hefty as the tow behind lawn sweeper then a push forward lawn sweeper is likely the way forward. We should remind you that these aren’t ideal for properties that have a lot of trees but they are excellent when it comes to clearing up moderate amounts of leaves and grass clippings left behind from mowing. The main difference between these and the tow behind is that you will need to exert yourself a little more when using this type of manual model.
Another thing that makes the push forward lawn sweeper better for smaller properties is that it is not designed to hold as much as a towed model. This does mean that you will have to stop and empty more frequently but with smaller yards, this isn’t really hugely problematic.
Which Type of Sweeper is Right For You?
If you’ve never purchased a lawn sweeper before then you might be wondering what you should be looking for or which product is right for you. Later on, we will tell you everything you need to think about when choosing a lawn sweeper but for now let’s consider which is the best yard sweeper for you.
It is important to compare the features of any lawn sweeper with your own needs. For example, if you have a very large piece of land then you aren’t going to want to choose a sweeper that has to be pushed; unless you’re in this for a workout! (which is why I went with a tow-behind sweeper). This is especially true if you already own a tractor or a zero-turn mower as it just makes sense to go for a towed lawn sweeper.
As well as this, you must think about how much of an area the sweeper will cover with each pass. For tow behind models, you can expect them to cover up to 46 inches which is imperative when you’re working on a larger space. On the other hand, small gardens won’t need something quite as wide and a push forward sweeper with a width between 20 and 26 inches should be more than sufficient.
You might also wish to consider the terrain in your yard. If it’s pretty uneven then you can bet your bottom dollar that a push forward sweeper is going to be much more hard work. In any case, you want to choose a model that offers great build quality, excellent durability and ease of use.
How to Use a Lawn Sweeper
You might think about a lawn sweeper in the same way that a vacuum works. Underneath, there are brushes that rotate and catch debris before transferring it into the hopper (The bit that stores the debris). These aren’t difficult pieces of equipment to use and even the most heavy duty lawn sweepers are pretty user friendly.
You’ll need to start the job by removing any large pieces of debris from the lawn that the sweeper won’t be able to handle. This might include things like large pinecones, branches and rocks. Your lawn sweeper will handle most smaller pieces of debris with ease.
Next, you will need to mow the lawn but don’t worry about leaving any grass clippings behind as the sweeper will deal with these later. While it isn’t essential to mow first, you’ll notice that the yard sweeper performs better on freshly mown grass.
When you’re ready to start sweeping, be sure to set the lawn sweeper to the same height that you cut the grass. Now you just need to push or tow the sweeper over the lawn moving in straight paths, the same way you would when mowing. Throughout the course of sweeping, you will need to stop to empty the hopper so do this as and when required.
What to Consider When Buying A Lawn Sweeper
Earlier we looked at how to choose the best lawn sweeper for you but there are many other things to consider when choosing this equipment, let’s take a closer look.
It’s important to choose a yard sweeper that is going to cover as wide an area as possible with each pass as this will save you time. However, it’s no good buying one that is so large that you cannot navigate tight corners or narrow spots on your grass so do take these things into consideration.
How the sweeper is propelled is a big deal and while there are manual sweepers, there are also a variety of powered options that will further reduce the time and effort you need to put in. These come in the same types as we have already discussed but are excellent for bigger areas, regardless of the type. Usually, these sweepers will rely on a gas powered engine and the brushes turn at a much quicker rate making them more easily able to get the job done quickly.
The last thing you want is for the brushes on the lawn sweeper to damage your grass. While most are designed to be gentle it is important to have some sort of adjustment so you can sweep in line with the length of the grass. Moreover, setting the brush to the right height will allow you to perform more detailed work.
When choosing a lawn sweeper, you will want to make sure that you do so according to its sweeping path. Sweepers are usually categorized this way making it simpler for buyers to understand what they are getting.
When you go for a push sweeper, you’ll find that the sweeping path sits somewhere between 21 and 26 inches and the size you choose should be in line with the size of your garden. You’ll make a similar decision when buying a pull behind sweeper only this time, you may have choices that go as wide as 50 inches per pass.
In any case, it’s a good idea to choose a yard sweeper whose hopper is large enough to work with the width of the sweeping path.
We have already touched on the idea that you must choose a lawn sweeper that suits the size of your yard. Generally speaking, bigger gardens will require a tow behind model, especially if you already use a riding mower or lawn tractor. On the other hand, a small yard will benefit from a push forward sweeper with a smaller capacity.
It’s important to look at the hopper capacity as this will give you a good idea of how much ground you’ll be able to cover before you have empty. If you don’t like the idea of having to stop several times throughout the job then we would recommend going for something bigger. The largest hoppers can be found on towed models.
Depending on the model, you may be able to find a hopper that holds in excess of 25ft³ which is a considerable amount. But owing to the size, these large hoppers can be difficult to empty without a dump feature.
Brush to Wheel Ratio
As you move your sweeper around the lawn, it is the power of the wheels that helps to turn the brushes. That said, the brushes turn more quickly than the wheels and how many times the brushes turn is calculated by multiplying the number of times the wheels turn using the brush to wheel ratio. In the simplest terms, the more times the wheels turn, the more times the brushes will turn, equally a much more efficient performance.
Price and Warranty
Some leaf sweepers are incredibly affordable while other, powered models come with a much less bank friendly price tag. It’s worth setting a budget to stick to but also consider that making a small investment will pay off in terms of durability and performance.
Whatever tool you buy, we would highly recommend looking for one that comes with a good warranty. This will give you peace of mind that, in the event anything goes wrong, you won’t be left forking out for repairs or replacement.
A lawn sweeper provides you with an efficient way to remove leaves, grass clippings and other small pieces of debris from your grass without over exerting yourself. There are different types that are suited to different sized gardens but it is important to look over all of the features and mull over your options before making a decision.
